School in a Box
A world-class classroom. No internet required.
School in a Box is a solar-powered learning hub for schools the internet has not reached. Learners connect to it over Wi-Fi and get lessons, past papers, and Luma's AI tutor, all served straight from the box. No data, no signal, no electricity bill.
Built for the schools the internet forgot
Across South Africa and the rest of the continent, thousands of schools still have no reliable connection. No fibre, no signal, and mobile data that costs more than many families can spare. The learners who could benefit most from digital learning are the last to get it. School in a Box flips that around: instead of waiting for the internet to reach these schools, we put everything they need inside one box and send it to them.
Everything a connected classroom has, without the connection
Powered by the sun
A solar panel keeps the box running all school day, even where there is no reliable electricity.
Its own Wi-Fi network
The box broadcasts a local network that any phone, tablet, or laptop can join. No SIM, no data, no signal needed.
Luma, fully offline
Lightweight AI models run directly on the box, so learners can ask Luma anything without an internet connection.
A full digital library
Curriculum-aligned lessons, past papers, and study resources live on the box, ready for every grade.
Built for the whole class
Many learners can connect at the same time, so one box can serve an entire classroom.
Free to run
Once the box is installed there is nothing left to pay. No data bundles, no subscriptions, no electricity bill.
How it works
The box arrives at school
We set it up with its solar panel in any classroom. No trenching, no towers, no technicians on call.
Learners connect over Wi-Fi
Any device joins the box's network in seconds, the same way you would connect to Wi-Fi at home.
Everything runs on the box
Lessons, past papers, and Luma's AI tutor are served straight from the box. The internet is optional, forever.
Every learner deserves world-class learning, whether or not the internet has reached their school yet.
School in a Box is in development. We are looking for schools, partners, and funders to help put the first boxes in classrooms. If that sounds like you, we would love to hear from you.
